Klaviyo Best Practices for Ecommerce Teams
Klaviyo Best Practices for Ecommerce Teams

Klaviyo is not the strategy. It is a very good database with a sending engine. Klaviyo best practices are about how you use it so ecommerce email compounds instead of turning into a junk drawer of clones.
This is the operating manual we wish every 7-figure catalog had taped next to the login. For the full build, that is Klaviyo agency or Klaviyo experts work. For a fast pass, use the self-audit.
Account setup: get the boring things right
If tracking is wrong, every dashboard is fan fiction.
- Shopify (or your cart) integration actually passing placed orders, refunds, and product catalog. Test a real order.
- Onsite tracking for viewed product and added to cart. Cart flow depends on it.
- SPF, DKIM, DMARC aligned with the sending domain. Not “we’ll do DNS later.” Deliverability.
- UTM consistent. If every campaign uses a different scheme, you cannot compare anything in analytics.
- Profiles you will use: VIP, maybe predicted gender if you sell split catalogs, last collection. Not 40 junk properties.
Naming convention (steal this)
Flows: FLW | Welcome | v3
Campaigns: CMP | 2026-09-16 | VIP early access
Segments: SEG | Buyers | 12m
Templates: TPL | Transactional | 2026
If names are “Copy of Copy of Welcome (2),” the account is already rotting.
Segments: five parents, then children
Best practice is not 80 overlapping definitions. It is five parents you can explain: new, buyers, VIP, at-risk, unengaged. Campaigns filter on those. Flows use flow filters, not a new segment for every idea.
Full guide: email segmentation.
Unengaged excluded from campaigns this week. Not as a Q4 project.
Flows: four spines, then extras
Welcome, cart, post-purchase, winback. Then replenishment, browse, back-in-stock, sunset. Automation flows.
Best practices inside each flow:
- Exclude people who already did the thing (purchased, emptied cart).
- One primary CTA per email.
- No stacked discounts against a campaign that is also 20% off.
- A human reviews the screenshot on a phone before it goes live.
SaaS-style accounts (onboarding, upgrade, at-risk usage) follow the same spine with different events. The SaaS case study is that shape.
Campaigns: a rhythm, not a firehose
Klaviyo will let you send every day. Your domain and your brand will not enjoy it.
- Plan a week, not a panic.
- Buyers/VIP get the interesting merch. New subscribers live in welcome unless there is a real reason.
- Measure revenue per recipient, not open rate as a trophy.
- A/B tests one variable, enough volume.
Templates: a system, not 40 one-offs
One (or two) master templates. Padding, type, buttons, gold accent if that is the brand — SuperMailo’s is #CC9C50 because we are consistent, not because every client should be gold.
Mobile email design: live text, 44px CTA, images off test, dark mode.
Clone for campaigns. Do not rebuild from blank because someone wanted a “fresh look” on a Wednesday.
Reporting: a scoreboard you can read in five minutes
| Weekly | Monthly |
|---|---|
| Flow vs campaign revenue | Repeat purchase 30/60 |
| RPR on campaigns | Unengaged % |
| Complaints / bounces | Discount rate |
| Welcome & cart conversion | VIP share of email revenue |
If reporting is a 40-page PDF, nobody will use it. If reporting is only opens, you are steering by a broken compass.
QA and ownership
Best practice is a person. Named. Still in the account.
Checklist before any flow change:
- Preview as a profile in each major segment.
- Place a test order / abandon a cart.
- Check mobile and dark mode.
- Confirm unsubscribes and preferences still work.
- Confirm you did not re-enable a clone.
Common mistakes are almost all ownership mistakes.
Klaviyo will not save a brand that will not operate it. If you want the account run like a system — schedule a consultation.
